Michael Vick set to claim award

Animal rights abuser Michael Vick

News outlets are reporting that disgraced Philadelphia Eagle football player and convicted dogfighting kingpin Michael Vick is attending the 32nd annual Ed Block Courage Awards dinner to claim a “courage” award.
I don’t blame the players on the Eagles for rallying around the fallen idol and voting him as this season’s “courage” recipient. They are like minded young men rallying around one of their own. That would be similar to blaming the cameraman for shooting Vick’s ridiculous and ill-conceived reality show. I blame corporate oversight…or lack there of. So my question is this – where the hell is the NFL during all this insanity?

The NFL is a league that fines players if they don’t pull up their socks while playing. The NFL fines players tens of thousands of dollars for touchdown celebrations. The NFL shuts down Twitter accounts. Why on earth would they sign off on this mess?
Michael Vick treated animals in a way that would lead a reasonable psychiatrist to determine he was a budding serial killer, went to jail, was released, resumed his career (which is his right as a talented man) and seemed to learn to behave himself. Beyond the question of that being “courageous” is the question of why one of the most powerful American brands would allow this to happen.
The BET reality show was ridiculous enough, but if the idiots on MTV have shows then why not Vick? That is an economic question for a network, I suppose and I don’t want to get into the race factor behind it because it’s non of my business.
What is my business is that I like watching the NFL a little bit less now that this farce is taking place.

Hmm, I thought we’d come far from the time people walked around with a scarlet letter their entire lives for past crimes. Seriously dude, get over it. The man lost everything he had and served his time in prison. If his teammates feel he is deserving of the award who are you to say he’s not provided the vote was fair? The NFL already exacted its fine on Vick, no need for them to do anything else. Let the man now sink or swim on his merits. His crimes were heinous, but in our society, I should hope that everyone has a chance to reform and live their lives free from such scorn once they have paid their debt to society.

You could not of said that any better! The dogs that survived that ordeal are the heroes in all of this, not Vick.

While I more agree with Shamik than the author, I do have to wonder what the Ed Block committee is thinking…Look, they can give an award to whoever they want, but what do they think is “courageous” about MV? He did his time and is putting his life back together just the same as any other convicted and released felon. While it takes some courage I grant you, I’m just not seeing how it’s worthy of an award.
